Gmail for Mac and more
This article might be interesting for those of you that come to this site by the hand of Spymac and other Macintosh users.
I have writen some articles about Gmail in this blog and outside, but each and every of them have been PC focused. The tips or apps I showed only worked under Windows or Linux environements, and I'm pretty sure that no Mac user is going to check his mail with a virtual machine, so here there are some apps for the 15% of Mac users that visit this page daily.
Importing contacts from MacOSX address book

You need to export the contacts comma separated using this tool to a .csv file.
Then you have to open Camino 0.7 (it doesn't work for Safari), login to your Gmail account and open the contacts window, you'll see the option to import contacts so open your .csv file and .... that's it. Easy, isn't it?

Do you remember Gtray? The Gmail message counter for Windows XP seems to have a Mac clone called GCount. It seems it doesn't show more than 100 messages, but I'm sure they'll fix it in the next version.

I talked before about Gmailto, the tool that lets us associate mailto links to Gmail. Well, it also has a Mac version here

Safari users might find more interesting dragging this link to the bookmarks toolbar and pressing it just before they want to click on a mailto link. You can find more info in since1968

For those of you that use Mozilla and want to use the mailto feature with Gmail but only when you want or if you don't want to isntall a thing in your computer, you only need to drag this link to your bookmark toolbar and press it whenever you're going to send an email. You can find more info and the source in Plutor.org.
You can also install this extension to your Firefox 0.9 if you prefer to have a context menu link that opens a Gmail compose window when clicking a mailto: link. Jed Brown is it's writer.

I also wrote about GML, a command line tool that let us import our mailbox into Gmail and I also pointed out a tiny GUI for it writen in .NET (the text in red). Well, now I' proud to show you gExodus, a program that works like GML, with a GUI and writen in python, so it'll be less memory sucker than the other GUI.

Automatic translation

Last night I took a look at the referrers from where you get to the weblog and I have found an increasing number of connections from online translation services, so I've decided to include a shortcut to Altavista's translation script at the botom of the sidebar.
Now you can browse the full weblog or each of the articles translated into Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Italian, French, Portuguese and Japanese easily, instalntly and free.

More Gmail tips and tricks

Some of you have been complaining that PGtGM eats too much memory and that it disconnects now and then. Well, until MrPostman new version is released you can use Email2Pop, another mail wingate like PGtGM but lighter.


And now another Gmail tip, for those of you who use Pine in your shells and want to bounce your mail directly to your Gmail account using Pine itself, this is what you have to do step by step:
Open pine. Go to Main Menu > Setup > Config. (As a shortcut, simply type in msc.) Scroll through the list of options and make sure the following two options are enabled (click on the screenshot to see a bigger image):
* -enable-bounce-cmd
* -enable-aggregate-command-set
Exit the configuration and save your changes. Go to the folder with the messages you want to bounce (redirect). To bounce, Select > All > Apply > Bounce. (As a shortcut here, type ;aab.) Enter the destination address, and hit return twice to start sending the messages.

Orkut time

I know some of you already know what Orkut is, as some of you are members but I'll make a small review of it for those who don't know what it is.
We can define Orkut as a friend community like friendster, although there are some diferences between both services and, like Gmail, is also a Beta-test service provided by Google (so you need to get invited before joining).



It has a friend finder (almost a clone of the one in Friendster) where you can find people that fits your needs.


Probably the main feature Orkut has is that you can join communities, they work like miniforums or newsgroups and you can create/join any community you find interesting. I think this is the only good point of Orkut, as it might replace the famous Yahoo Groups.

Now that I've given you a short tour of it's services I will give my personal opinion.
They ask you hundreds of questions to fill your profile (I suppose they'll be used to make consumer stats), more questions even that Friendster. If you fill the complete profile I'm pretty sure that you will learn things about you that you didn't even knew.

Most of the communities are dead, some of them haven't been accessed since April or so and that is a big problem if you join a community to ask something as the question will probably never be answered or even read. So maybe they should consider cleaning some old groups.

Anyways the service is good and fast (it only takes you seconds to invite a friend or join a community) although it still has conection problems, but that's normal if we consider that it's still in testing phase. If the Google crew ever make a IM proggie for it I'm sure it would throw MSN messenger to the ground.

Spain Lost its Euro-Oportunity
Yes, I'm talking about soccer and yes, , Spain has lost a great oportunity to get a nice result in the EuropeanCup. When the coach let a player like Raul play 90 minutes when he shouldn't even travel to Lisbon.
Raul is not worth the number '7' he wears in his team, Real Madrid, or in the Spanish soccer team. He doesn't deserve it.

The jewel of Spain exposed on Internet

Finally Spanish old towns like Burgos open their doors to the World showing their beauty....in pixel art. Here we can make a virtual 3D walk around the most important streets of Burgos.
This seems to follow the initiative TPI (yellow pages in Spain) started some time ago with 'Calle a calle' which only include Bilbao, Barcelona, Madrid, Marbella, Sevilla and Valencia.

More Gmail tools and tips
Ilia Alshanetsky offers us a php highlighted script to easily send/retrieve files from Gmail. It converts Gmail in a remote and fast online store.

G-mailto is an utility that automatically associates "mailto" email links on the web with GMail.
It also shows a nice review of Gmail's javascript compose code in his web.

By the way, it seems a new version of PGtG has been released, it's v0.8 right now and now allows us to change the port (previous version gave problems to Microsoft smtp users), removes adverts on outgoing emails, autoupdates, ... nice improvements for a newborn program. The main problem it still has is that .NET framework (in which PGtG is programmed) sucks 45Mb of ram, too much for old computers like mine.

Orkut comunity

I recently got inside Orkut, the fancy new Google's comunity, it's quite similar to Friendster, so I don't give it too much time of life unless they develop an instant messaging tool like MSN Messenger (maybe under Jabber?).

My personal Gmail review with screenshots
I have been testing Gmail and it lacks a few features some other mail accounts have, the good thing is that there are some free programs available that bypass them

Gmail doesn't have an embedded pop mail fetcher, and there are some mail providers that don't allow automatic mail forwarding. If you want to forward the mail from your Hotmail or POP3 mail accounts you can use GetMail. It will do resend all your messages to your Gmail account.


Gmail autorefreshes the browser window, so you'll know when you have new mail if you have the browser opened, but if you miss a new mail notifier for your Gmail account like those embedded in MSN Messenger or Yahoo IM you should try GTray, it'll show a small balloon everytime you get a new mail message.

I have used it and I must advise you a couple of things, it's really a pain making it work in a Win98 box and it uses Internet Explorer to browse the mail.

Now, if we want to browse our Gmail from a pop mail client we only need 'Pop Goes the Gmail', this tiny proggie will allow you to do it

It needs .NET runtimes to be installed in your system.

Another good thing Gmail has is, obviously, the mailbox 1Gb limit. Some might look at it as the perpetual mailbox, if you think so then you might upload all the mail in your local mailbox or mail directory to Gmail. There's no need to do it by hand, as Mark Lyon has written a script for us he calls 'Mbox & Maildir to Gmail Loader (GML)'.
Update: BizarroMan has writen a GMLGUI for this program, so it's even easier to use. You can get it here.
It's writen in .NET, so I don't recommend you to use it if you don't have .NET framework already installed

But this is not a flaming post. Gmail has really cool features apart from the storage. These are some of the features that make Gmail it different from other mail accounts:

It groups mails in conversations (not in a threaded way like some mail clients) and it shows a small popup at the bottom of the page showing the name of the next reply.



It has a comprehensive search (what else could we expect from Google)


It has a nice span filter, if the automatic filter doesn't works for you you can easily configure a filter or denounce it:

The world is crazy
'Iraqis Paying 5 Cents a Gallon for Gas', you might not see anything extrange in that header because, as you can imagine, all petrol producer countries have really low gas prices, specially when their incomes are small as they are in this MidEastern country. The problem appears when you read the article.

It begins with this shocking sentence:
'While Americans are shelling out record prices for fuel, Iraqis pay only about 5 cents a gallon for gasoline — a benefit of hundreds of millions of dollars subsidies bankrolled by American taxpayers.'
Come on, you are taking their petrol for free and you have destroyed every infrastructure in the country, do you really think it's cheap for then? They could get it almost free if you'd let them control their resources.

Another sentence that caught my atention was:
'The cheap fuel is spurring unsustainable demand, promoting wasteful use of energy and transportation, and squandering Iraq's oil output that might otherwise be exported, Cordesman said'
It's kinda ironic to hear that from an American, the country that has denied signing the Kyoto Protocol, the country which support a sanguinary and feudal monarchy in Saudi Arabia because they provide the petrol the US needs to keep the obsolete steel and electricity industry and, last but not least, the country that has 'illegally' invaded another country, also ruled by a sanguinary dictator, so every American mother can take their children to school in one of those 'ecological' SUVs.

The rest of the article cries that the Iraqui petrol industry only serves 2M barrels/day when in 1991 it could produce near 5M and shows some comments collected among iraqui taxi drivers, but it forgets that the main problem the US has rebuilding the petrol industry is that they have taken American equipment, American engineers and American supply parts although almost every plant in Iraq uses European equipment, which is in most of the cases inconpatible with American standars.

Greetings to Jim Craine (Associated Press) for providing us this example of the hypocrisy and lack of rigor of some journalist when they cover a conflict like this one.

No, Lucas Arts is not going to remake that wonderful Indy Jones adventure. The news say that Scientists have found a sunk island (currently a salt mars) in the shores of Cádiz, a beautiful southern Spanish city, using satellital images. It seems the island matches Plato's description. This 'Scientific-Fiction' story could be considered Sci-Fi as there are lots of other theories that place the old city of Atlantis in the coast of France, Anctartica or inland the straits of Gibraltar.

Looking back

Is pornography related with comunists or make our children homsexual? According to this movies, yes. Well, this nonsense appears in "Perversion for Profit", a two chapter antiporn documentary of the sixties. I found it while browsing the Internet Movie Archive.
It's funny to see the opinion the "Citizens for Decent Literature" had about pornography although it's probably that they keep the same opinion about cyberporn sites.

Folding@home


I have joined SpyMac's Folding@home Team in this protein folding distributed project. Protein folding is the key to advance in the treatment of several diseases such as Altzheimer, mad cow disease, ...

If you want to get involved to the project you just have to download a client, choose a username and a group (SpyMac group is 11331).
Clients (command line or interfaced) can be downloaded here for all platforms.
It's time to change your screensaver into Folding@home's one, isn't it?

Anti-piracy album
I have just taken a look at the referrers that lead you to this webspace and I saw a Google search for 'Juanshows'. It intrigued me as I thought I hadn't writen that word before, in fact I didn't know what it meant. So I did a search for that word in the blog and I found '[Listening: Donde Iran? - Juanshows - No A La Pirateria (3:04)]'. What's this? Have I been hearing something I didn't even know I had in my harddrive?
As you can imagine I made another search, seeking the mp3 file this time. The name of the album was 'No a la piratería' (say no to piracy in Spanish), it seems that the Sgae (Spanish RIAA) made it's best to launch a pop/rock album to teach people the risk piracy means to the music industry. So Vale Music (the company that distributes most of the albums of the Spanish 'Fame Academy' program) came up with this VA album, where most of the artists/groups are almost unknown.
I imagine an discographic executive wearing with his expensive suit offering this groups the recording of these tracks as a way to promote and get their music on the radios nationwide. It could be ok if they would have given any publicity to the album or the groups that appear in it, but I have heard nothing on the radio, seen no ads on TV or music mags and it's even really difficult to find any information about this album even in Internet (the Vale Music's web doesn't even say a word about it).

I have decided promote it a bit here, as it is fresh and it can give you 51 minutes of nice hearing:

Media manipulation or high impact design

That must be the question Kate Brigham tried to answer when she chose to make her thesis.
Although she tries to avoid a direct opinion about the way news agencies present their news, she is concerned about the power visual information has in common people as we have not been taught to analyze and decode the different techniques communicator designers use. She offers some commented examples for us to understand it even with interactive applications.
It's an interesting read that can help us to be more critic with what we read or watch on TV.

Forgive me, I'm guilty of ... SMSing

Not only it's a proof of the paranoia security forces suffer (specially in the US), this article about a guy who has been arrested for sending a SMS to a friend containing lyrics from Tommy Gun reveals that this new high-tech big brothers are dumb as they only search for certain words.
This also proves that our text messaging is being tapped. Maybe we need to start signing every SMS with words like bomb, gun, terror or hostage as we did with our emails when Echelon appeared (Bloggidity's signature generator) so we can overload the wiretapping system. We could also begin to use secure messaging, though it might not be as secure as we might think.

Fahrenheit 9/11

It seems that being the winner of the Palm D'Or at Cannes this year has opened the door of the US market to Michael Moore's last film. Indiewire anounces that it will be released by Lions Gate Films in at least 1000 theaters on June 25th.
CineyTele says something Spanish readers might want to know, Alta Films has guaranteed showing in Spain 'Fahrenheit 9/11', 'Unprecedented' and 'The truth uncovered' (Named 'Uncovered: La guerra de Irak' in Spanish).

An article in Slashdot says that Microsoft has granted a patent for double-clicking (Ptnt # 6,727,830 ) and for long time pressed buttons. Just one thing, didn't Macintosh introduce dbl clicking before Gates?

I have just finished reading Cyberia. Douglas Rushkoff has choiced to let us read it free from his homepage (you can also download it in a Word file). I read most of it in my HP49G, where I ported the html text so that it was readable.
