A memorial service, often called a funeral, is often officiated by clergy from the decedent's, or bereaved's, church or religion. A funeral may take place at either a funeral home or church. A funeral is held according to the family's choosing which may be a few days after the time of death, allowing family members to attend the service.

The deceased is usually transported from the funeral home to a church in a hearse, a specialized vehicle designed to carry casketed remains. The deceased is often transported in a procession (also called a funeral cortege), with the hearse, funeral service vehicles, and private automobiles traveling in a procession to the church or other location where the services will be held. In a number of jurisdictions, special laws cover funeral processions - such as requiring other vehicles to give right-of-way to a funeral procession. Funeral service vehicles may be equipped with light bars and special flashers to increase their visibility on the roads. They may also all have their headlights on, to identify which vehicles are part of the cortege, although the practice also has roots in ancient Roman customs. After the funeral service, if the deceased is to be buried the funeral procession will proceed to a cemetery if not already there. If the deceased is to be cremated the funeral procession may then proceed to the crematory.

Funeral services commonly include prayers; readings from the Bible or other sacred texts; hymns (sung either by the attendees or a hired vocalist); and words of comfort by the clergy. Frequently, a relative or close friend will be asked to give a eulogy, which details happy memories and accomplishments; often commenting on the deceased's flaws, especially at length, is considered impolite. Sometimes the delivering of the eulogy is done by the clergy. Clergy are often asked to deliver eulogies for people they have never met. Church bells may also be tolled both before and after the service.

Tradition also allows the attendees of the memorial service to have one last opportunity to view the deceased and say good-bye; the immediate family (siblings (and their spouses); followed by the deceased's spouse, parents and children) are sometimes the very last to view their loved one before the coffin is closed. This opportunity can take place immediately before the service begins, or at the very end of the service.

During the funeral and at the burial service, the casket may be covered with a large arrangement of flowers, called a casket spray. If the deceased served in a branch of the Armed forces, the casket may be covered with a national flag; however, in the US, nothing should cover the national flag according to Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1, Paragraph 8i.

Funeral customs vary from country to country. In the United States, any type of noise other than quiet whispering or mourning is considered disrespectful.

Note: In some religious denominations, for example, Roman Catholic, Anglican and Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ), eulogies are prohibited or discouraged during this service, in order to preserve respect for traditions. Also, for these religions, the coffin is traditionally closed at the end of the wake and is not re-opened for the funeral service http://www.sanjosefuneralservice.com 408-621-1271

Another time wasting tool for politicians?
Congreso de los diputados multimedia
Spanish politicians have finished their holidays today and they have been welcomed to the Congress of Deputees by a shiny 15'' TFT screen showing a personalized Windows XP desktop.

It is supposed to help them read/write transcripts, have remote assistance from their team and gather instant information about whatever is being discussed in the Congress and I'm pretty sure they will have hard policies implemented, but after seeing it I have some questions flying around my head:
- How long will it take until a journalist takes and publish a pic of a deputee playing some kind of videogame or surfing sex sites?
-How long will it take until we see these computers infected by some kind of malware?
- Will they use it's idle processor time to contribute to any of the distributed computing projects that are around there (SETi, Folding@Home, ClimatePrediction, ...)?

Time will tell us.

Click on the pic if you want to see the terminal in detail

When rumble cannot hide beauty

Great photographs but... does showing nude top models in rumble scenarios like those help gathering funds for Greenpeace?

Anyways, click on the pic to surf to Feromono's gallery of this Greenpeace campaign. The models are Verónica Blume, Martina Klein, Nieves Alvarez, Esther Cañadas, Almudena Fernández, Vanessa Lorenzo, Vanessa Vasbert, Estefanía Luyk and Laura Sánchez among others.

I followed the link from your site to his gallery. I think it is powerful work. Though I share their aims (mostly) I don't always approve of Greenpeace's methods. This campaign makes me want to give them money.

Thanks for posting this.

Peace,

Date 9/11/2001 - Location: Baghdad, Iraq
- “How long do you think before they bomb us?”
- “But it wasn’t us. It can’t be us…” I rationalized.
- “It doesn’t matter. It’s all they need.”

And it was true. It began with Afghanistan and then it was Iraq.

Four years later and the War on Terror (or is it the War of Terror?) has been won:
Score:
Al-Qaeda – 3,000
America – 100,000+

Congratulations!

This is a rip-off the story I have just read at Baghdad Burning. Follow the link to read the full story as I'm sure it will make you think.

Security != --Liberties

There are hundres of thing Europe can and should copy from the USA, but trading liberties and cutting down fundamental rights for more security is definitely not one of them.

It's clear that we must do whatever is in our hands to, using Clarke's own words, "defend our values of respect of tolerance of freedom and democracy against any who wish to destroy or replace them with some other doctrine, particularly if they seek to use violence to promote their ambition", but deportation laws like the ones he wants to be approved or the retention of all-type communications is not a good way of defending them.

Some politicians don't seem to understand that human rights apply to everybody, including terrorists, and that, as the graffiti in the pic says "life is freedom", and there's no life without it.

FATx/NTFS is dead, hello WinFS

WinFS Beta

Microsoft has made available Windows Future System (WinFS) beta through msdn (80'2MB), the new Windows filesystem is intended to be introduced with the recently named Windows Vista.

At first glance it wil allow upgrade the previous file systems bringing a better handling of structured and unstructured data, allowing symbolic links, removing the 26 drives limitation, ... However there are several comments that point that it makes almost impossible the coexistance of different operating systems in the same volume.

This beta is focused to developers, who will be able to use its unified Item Data Model across applications, present new relational organization constructs for data, and create applications that exploit data more powerfully. WinFS is a development platform that will improve developer productivity and reduce organizations' time to market. It requires Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed. WinFS Beta 1 will install on other editions of Windows XP such as Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and Windows XP Media Center Edition, but is only supported on Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition though it only provides local access if installed in home ed .

You can watch a 58 minute video with a WinFS demonstration at Channel9.

So far, so near
Although I've been reading and watching the news about Katrina's hurricane, I had the movie-like image the news are showing (aerial photographs, military and police trucks and helicopters rescuing people, ...) and I didn't realize how bad were thing going there.... until a few hours ago.

I got a phone call from a friend who was "stored" (that's the word he used) without protection, water, food or medical services in a convention center with some other thousands of people. We couldn't talk me a lot in the 1'23'' the call lasted, but it allowed me to see what's happening there under another perspective.

After the call I digged the network for more information but I was kinda surprised of the lack of information and the few news sources I could find considering this catastrophe is happening in a First World country like the USA. I don't believe news agencies don't have interest or money to cover this news so I have to ask myself if they are using some kind of selfcensorship like they did on 9-11.

Sometimes a call can force you to open your eyes and see what it's really happening out there.
